Well. My first blog post. What to write about? Frocks? Undies? Tea? Cake? All of the above? Probably.
I suppose really the first post should be about my home-from-home, The March Hare in East Looe. The best little boutique in Cornwall, especially if you desire vintage, retro and all manner of glamorous loveliness. That's where you'll find it.
It all started a couple of years ago, when yours truly was mulling over possible career moves and mooted the idea of a boutique, specialising in vintage stuff. I then got a teensy bit side-tracked by the burgeoning burlesque scene (once a showgirl, always a showgirl it would seem) and spent quite a while imagining a wonderful burlesque-inspired shop somewhere in Looe. Naming it was a problem. Obviously, 'The Pastie Shop' would be fun but, apart from the fact it would seriously piss off the owner of 'The Pasty Shop', the likelihood of having a trail of old boys requiring resuscitation after discovering what 'pasties' are in an alternative world, was not terribly appealing. At least, not on a day when I was feeling at all kindly towards the world at large. But then, real life took over and, naively, I listened to people who said, 'Oh, you couldn't possibly...' and the idea was shelved.
It wasn't, however, removed from the shelf and put into the bin so about a year later, when the realisation dawned that I was, frankly, unemployable, I picked it up, dusted it off and set about making it a reality. Six weeks later, The March Hare was born and opening its door for business.
And here it is. The March Hare, Buller Street, East Looe, Darkest Cornwall, PL13 1AR. A peach of a little boutique and quite the loveliest place to work I have ever imagined. I spend the day surrounded by vintage frocks, delicious faux-retro underwear and cosmetics, amazing corsetry and rails of wonderful retro-inspired clothing. And then I get to share it with like-minded people. What's not to love?
